In Baltimore and surrounding regions increased flooding from hurricane storm surges or extreme rain fall events could be a result of climate change. The recent flooding in Ellicott City was called a 1 in 1000 year event but it has happened twice in the last few years. Locally choices about land use and how we develop watershed regions can have an impact. I also think that rising temperatures will directly impact people locally as the number of record high days increases. This will particularly be the case if the energy costs rise sharply once fossil fuels are depleted so that it is difficult to provide the level of air conditioning we have grown accustomed to. Lastly, thought not a local issue, I think that political instability and large scale migrations will have an impact. I think that the recent immigration actions taken by the Trump administration and favored by his supporters are a fear based response to this global reality with potential local impacts.
