Discussion Questions: Sound Environmental Education Principles

Discussion Questions for Key Characteristic #2: Based on Sound EE Principles

  1. In the video we learned that local science supervisors surveyed their teachers to learn of the support they needed to implement MWEEs. How are you or your organization thinking about building on the interests and needs of your audience? How are you finding out what those needs are?
  2. Meredeth discusses the idea of making sure the programming is cross curricular as a best practice. Often MWEEs exist only in science or, even if the program connects to other subjects, it ends up falling on science teachers to lead. Have you or your organization been able to implement environmental education in other subjects? If yes, what made it successful? If no, what prevented other subjects from being meaningfully integrated into the programming?
  3. Krista describes hiring staff that are representative of the student population they were working with including people of color and people who are bi or multilingual. She gives a lot of practical tips for making Maymont’s programs culturally relevant. How have you or your organization worked to make programming culturally relevant? What could you do to ensure the programming is culturally relevant and timely?
    1. Krista’s tips: recognizing multiple perspectives, ensuring racial representation, encouraging a critical lens, connecting to student values and experiences, emphasizing student voice, grounding in relationship-based experiences. Meredith's tip: being sensitive to the needs of students at a moment in time.
  4. Taking informed environmental action is particularly momentous and an important part of the MWEE. But some schools in this project struggled to get there for varying reasons. What is this group doing to differentiate support or instruction in cases like this? How have you or your organization combat the individual school or class challenges of implementing an action project?
