Trail running

Writer | Editor | Author in Seattle, Washington

Hi, I'm Michelle Goodman and I've been at this writing-for-dollars game for more than two decades. My essays and journalism have appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, Seattle Times, Salon, Vice, Narratively, Magenta, Mental Floss, ABCNews.com, BBC.com, CNN.com, MSN, Seattle magazine, BUST, Bitch, The Bark, Boing Boing, and as well as on KNKX public radio.

I've contributed to several anthologies, most recently Alone Together: Love, Grief, and Comfort in the Time of Covid-19, which benefits independent bookstores. I'm also an award-winning author of two irreverent career guides—The Anti 9-to-5 Guide and My So-Called Freelance Life—both published by Seal Press.

I'm honored to be among this year's cohort of Jack Straw Writers, curated by Anastacia-Renee. Work I completed during this program appears in this anthology and this collaboration with musician Kristin Chambers of Bushwick Book Club Seattle. My writing has also received support from Hedgebrook, Playa, Whiteley Center, and Artsmith.

I've kept a roof overhead most of my adult life by wrangling and managing copy for media companies, small businesses, startups, Fortune 500s, and universities. I'm currently a copywriter for a large tech company in the Puget Sound region.

I live near the beach with a snuggly dog, autocratic cat, and benevolent ghost. When this blasted pandemic subsides, I plan to hug everyone in sight at all the literary events, second run movie theaters, live shows in overcrowded sweaty clubs, and house parties I can attend.
